In this two-day pastel workshop, we will be exploring the landscape of western North Carolina. We will use this beautiful forgiving medium to create two painterly landscapes with vibrant colors and loose bold strokes. You will be introduced to two different sub-straights and two different types of underpainting techniques. Each morning will begin with a short demonstration by Addren and then you will be free to create your own painting with her help as needed.
On day one we will be working on Uart Sanded Pastel paper using a traditional dry underpainting to create a scene from the Blue Ridge Parkway of yellow wildflowers in front of an interesting tree line.
On day two we will be working on Ampersand Pastel Board. Addren will show you a couple of different types of wet underpaintings and how they influence the pastel put over them. Then you will create a small painting of an active sky over the mountains of North Carolina in the fall.
As with all of Addren’s workshops, composition, strong value patterns, and color harmony will be emphasized.
PASTELS: Bring whatever hard and soft pastels you have. No oil pastels
If you are purchasing for the first time, a good place to start is the 80pc half-stick plein air set or 120pc half-stick Paris Collection by Sennelier. Both are available on-line from Jerry’s Artarama. A semi-hard pastel set of 24 or 36 by Mungyo is a good addition to your soft pastels. These are also available at Jerry’s Artarama.
PAPER: Day 1 - Uart Sanded Pastel Paper in a 400 or 320 grit, size 12x16, plus a small sheet for trying out your colors and experimenting on. Day 2 – Ampersand Pastel board. You will need one 8x10 to create your painting on, and a couple of small boards to experiment with underpaintings on.
MISCELLANEOUS: Watercolors or Gouache IF YOU HAVE IT. A small sampling of basic colors is all you need. You can also use acrylic paint or alcohol ink.
